Healthy Habits

  • Your baby should be doing mostly table foods and some purees – it is important to include them in your eating routine so they develop a healthy relationship with food
  • Slowly transition from formula/breast milk to whole milk -the goal is between 21-24 ounces of whole milk/day – transition to 1% or skim milk is recommended after age 2.
  • Allow self-feeding and transition away from bottles to sip cups -they may try to use a spoon but will likely eat with their hands
  • Provide healthy choices and do not force feed
  • Avoid sugar and juices – fresh fruits provide more fiber and better portion control
  • snacks should incorporate protein and calcium to promote good growth
  • Avoid choke foods (peanuts, popcorn, hot dogs, whole grapes and candy)
  • a sample diet is provided in the following link: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/feeding-nutrition/Pages/Sample-One-Day-Menu-for-a-One-Year-Old.aspx
