Frequently Asked Questions for Your Cumming Pediatrician

Choosing a pediatrician is one of the most important things you will do for your family. Finding a Cumming pediatric office where you feel that your children will receive the most up-to-date care (and in the most caring of places) is imperative. Below are some frequently asked questions from parents who are expecting a newborn baby or moving to our area.

General Pediatrician Questions

As you’re choosing a pediatrician for your family you will rightly have many questions. Below are some of the most common general questions that people ask.

Vickery Pediatrics located in Cumming, GA sees about 8,000 patients per year (between four pediatricians). Each of our pediatricians has worked in ER, NICU and urgent care settings before joining private practice.

Our doctors are committed to providing the best pediatric medical care for your child, and get to know your family as they tend to your pediatric needs. We are healthcare with a heart. Our practice takes a team approach to overall care, and our pediatricians are passionate about patient education.

For after-hours care we utilize the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta nurse advice line. They’re able to provide phone triage and help you make the best decision on what to do next for your child. To reach the nurse advice line, call (404) 785-5437.

Vickery Pediatrics has a pediatrician on call for both weeknights and weekends, in case of an emergent issue that cannot be solved by the nurse advice line.

Newborn Baby Care Questions

Having a baby is a life-changing experience, and you can trust Vickery Pediatrics for all your newborn questions. Below are the most frequently asked questions from our newborn parents.

A newborn pediatrician is a specially trained doctor who focuses on caring for the smallest members of our families. From a tiny newborn into a child’s young adult years, pediatricians are there every step of the way. They offer expertise in many important areas, from ensuring healthy growth and development to guiding parents on nutrition, preventing illnesses, even nurturing emotional well-being.

Meeting your Cumming, GA newborn pediatrician before your baby arrives is a great idea. It lets you ask questions, get to know each other, ease worries – and feel confident about your choice of healthcare provider for your baby-to-be.

The team at Vickery Pediatrics offers prenatal visits and prenatal counseling. Take advantage of this and start building a relationship that will support your newborn baby’s health from day one.

The neonatologists at Northside Atlanta, Northside Forsyth, Emory Johns Creek and Piedmont will take care of all your baby’s needs during your time in the hospital.

They will communicate their findings to us through the newborn paperwork you’ll receive when discharged from the hospital. We enjoy a great working relationship with all hospitals in the area.

In the rare event of complications during the hospital stay, we will typically receive timely phone follow-up from the neonatologists so we can provide seamless care for your newborn once you leave the hospital.

The doctors at Vickery Pediatrics believe that breastfeeding provides a newborn with optimal nutrition, and in addition, provides many immune benefits for your newborn.

We also know that breastfeeding can be challenging for a new mom. We strongly recommend taking advantage of the lactation team to be found at each of our local hospitals. They provide incredible insight and work hard to ensure your baby fully benefits from breastfeeding.

We discuss feeding at all well visits, and believe that the well-being of your baby comes first. Supplementation with formula is often part of the feeding plan (especially at the beginning), and sometimes, full formula feeding is the right answer.

Every feeding decision is made with you, and reflects what’s right for your particular situation.

At Vickery Pediatrics we understand the importance of convenience for families. A pediatrician telehealth visit provides the same high level of care you can expect from an in-person appointment. After downloading the healow™ app from the App Store or Google Play Store, parents can then schedule a virtual call with a newborn pediatric doctor.

Well-Child Visit Questions

Well-child visits are a vital part of your child’s health and development. Below are common questions that many of our patients ask.

We like to see our newborn patients within the first few days of being home from the hospital. Simply call the office once the baby is born to get onto our schedule. We like to review your newborn’s paperwork and go over all “new baby basics” at the first visit. We generally recommend a return nurse visit for a weight check at 1 week of age; then we’ll see you again at 1 month. These first couple of visits are a great time to go over feeding, sleep schedules and overall development. Future well visits are generally completed at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months.

We are a pro-vaccine practice. We immunize our patients using the schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC. We do not offer an alternative vaccine schedule (as there are no medically accepted ones). While we are aware that this is a difficult decision for some parents, the re-emergence of contagious illnesses like measles and polio reiterates the need for strong vaccination practices.

At Vickery Pediatrics, we understand the importance of well-child visits in ensuring the optimal health and development of your child. We recommended that well-child visits continue until the age of 21. At this time your young adult would want to select a primary care physician serving adult patients.

Our ultimate goal is to ensure the continued well-being of your child from birth to adulthood, offering personalized care every step of the way.

Sick Care Questions

When a child gets sick it can be a stressful time for parents. The team at Vickery Pediatrics is here to put your mind at ease and answer all your questions.

We make every attempt to see your child for a same-day sick visit. Simply call the office for an appointment time. While we are unable to accept walk-in visits, we will do everything we can to ensure your baby gets the best care.

If you can’t get a same-day sick appointment in the office we’ll explore all possibilities, including a possible telemedicine appointment. Also, you may communicate with a pediatrician and/or member of our nursing staff through the patient portal.

For after-hours assistance we recommend the 24-hour nurse hotline at (404) 785-5437.

At Vickery Pediatrics we provide comprehensive care that includes the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral, developmental and learning disorders in children. Our team is dedicated to addressing the unique needs of each child and to support families through every step of the evaluation and treatment process.

As we manage these challenges, we work closely with families in a collaborative manner that empowers children and their caregivers to navigate these issues with confidence. The team at Vickery Pediatrics is committed to providing the specialized care and support your child needs to thrive.

In many bacteria, emerging antibiotic drug resistance is becoming a national health crisis. The doctors at Vickery Pediatrics are very judicious with their use of antibiotics. While they are indeed appropriate for many childhood illnesses, a doctor will fully discuss the particular illness, all supportive care that can be taken, their findings from an exam, along with the medicines that could benefit your child (and why). They will prescribe antibiotics only when appropriate for the clinical scenario, and will be happy to discuss the thought process behind their decision. Our physicians will not call in antibiotic prescriptions over the phone.
